Summary

The Sriperumbudur-Oragadam suburban region on the outskirts of Chennai metropolis in the South Indian State of Tamil Nadu is projected as a new growth centre and as a favoured destination for real estate investment (Ernst and Young 2014; JLL 2014).

The government of Tamil Nadu intends to develop the region as a global hub of manufacturing. It implemented several projects for building industrial parks (IPs), Special Economic Zones (SEZs), and Industrial Corridors (ICs).

These interventions accelerated the real estate development in the region and put upward pressure on land prices. Indian and international-al real estate development firms promoted integrated townships and gated housing complexes, anticipating the demand for housing from the employees of multinational companies and non-resident Indians.

This chapter explores the micro-practices of land transformation in the region.
